Naomi rested next to her father in the waiting room of the hospital. She hadn't been doing well lately. Sadly, she had gone months without seeing a doctor. This was because her dad could not afford one. They saw the doctor on the reservation for next to nothing and he recommended she go to the hospital. It was an urgent recommendation. So, Naomi's father took out their savings, which was probably only enough for one hospital visit. But, at least she could finally see a good doctor. Even if it was just one time.
The girl curled up in the chair. Her stomach was bothering her. Lately she hadn't been able to keep anything down. Her father kept it under control with the use of over the counter drugs and gatorade, but it had gotten to the point where it stopped working.
Tears rolled down the young girl's cheeks. It hurt so bad. Her father lovingly stroked her hair.
Her sister sat on the other side of their father, coloring in a Mickey Mouse coloring book.
Waiting seemed like forever. It got to the point where she could not take it anymore and she heaved. It was just liquid because she hadn't eaten anything in two days. But it smelled pretty bad. Needless to say it was enough to get the nurse to call her back right away. A nurse came out to clean it up as the other nurse escorted her through the double doors. She gave Naomi a gown to change into and placed her in an exam room to wait for the doctor.

Carlisle had been at the hospital practically all day. A doctor's work was never done. But he liked his work. Today he mostly dealt with elderly patients. Some of them were cranky, but it didn't make him love his job any less. When the nurse gave him the info of his next patient he went to her. It was a little girl. This was definately a change of pace for the day. He entered the room with the clip board in his hands. He smiled at the girl.
"Hello Naomi. I'm Dr. Cullen. Now, I understand you've been unable to keep any food down. We're going to get you started on an IV drip. But first, I need you to lay down for me." He told the little girl in his most gentle voice. Something about the girl wasn't right. He could smell it. His brow furrowed. He would definately have to order some tests on her, starting with blood work.

Naomi looked up at him shyly before following his orders and laying down. She was in a lot of pain. The girl closed her eyes and tried to relax. She had no clue what an IV drip was, but she started to freak out when a nurse entered with bags of saline and a syringe. She did not like needles.
"Please don't!" She cried. She looked up at the doctor with tears forming in her eyes. They wanted to poke a needle into her. This was not something she wanted. Naomi didn't understand that this was a necessary procedure that they had to do in order for her to get better."I'm sorry for throwing up in the waiting room! Just don't give me a shot!" She cried, thinking it was some sort of punishment.

Carlisle frowned slightly. She was really terrified. He could sense it because of her heart rate."Shhhh. It's okay." He said calmly. She thought it was a punishment."We're not doing this for any reason but to make you better. It may sting for a minute, but I promise you, it will help make you well. Just relax. It will be over before you know it." He continued. He really didn't want to cause her pain, but it was necessary."It'll be alright." He smiled at her."We also need to take a blood sample. If you let us do this, you'll get something very special." He didn't like bribing, but sometimes it was the only way to get children to cooperate.
The nurse used the needle to get the IV drip into the girl as Carlisle worked to calm her down.

Naomi just focussed on Carlisle's voice. She didn't like the fact she was bound by a tube of liquid going through her arm, but there was nothing she could do. When the doctor mentioned blood, she got a little squeamish. The only way to get blood was to inject a needle into her..again."I want to go home." She cried softly.
Just then the nurse pulled out another needle. She wrapped a tourniquet around the girl's arm. Naomi would just have to grin and bear it. She looked up at Carlisle and tried to focus on him instead of the fact a lady was about to jab her with a fairly thick needle. "oooooowww." She cried as the needle poked through her skin and then her vein.

Carlisle took her hand and squeezed it gently. Doctor's were notorious for having cold hands so he didn't worry."I know you do. We'll try and let go home soon. It all depends on if we can get you to stop vomitting and rehydrate you. I know it's an unpleasant situation." He watched as the nurse took some blood. The nurse pulled the needle out and bandaged her."There..it's over little one." He looked up at the nurse."We're going to give her some Ondansetron. It should stop her vomitting."
Carlisle let go of her hand."I'm going to get your medication and that special suprise I promised you."
Carlisle left the room. He returned about 10 minutes later, with a vial of medication and stethoscope, which was her suprise."Here you go. Your very own stethoscope. You can listen to your heart or someone else's heart with it." He handed it to her and then administered the drug via needle."Sorry we had to jab you again. But its how we get the medication through your system. You should begin feeling better in about an hour. Would you like me to get your father?"

Naomi grabbed the stethoscope and began to play with it. She thought it was very cool. She tensed up when he jabbed her with another needle. Then he offered to get her father. She nodded. Naomi wanted her daddy."Please." She said softly. Though she really didn't want her father to see her like this. She didn't want her sister to see her like this either because she knew it scared her. Just then, her father and sister entered. The nurse had already fetched them. She was happy to see her dad.
"Daddy.." She said with a slight smile. Just then she felt like she was about to throw up..again. The nurse knew because she had grabbed her stomach and sat up a little. She gave a plastic bin to her. Her dad pulled her hair back and looked at her, worriedly as she expelled what little contents she had in her body.

Carlisle didn't gross out. He was a doctor and nothing grossed him out or embarrassed him. Instead, he was concerned. It didn't look like the normal color of stomach acid. But hopefully the medicine would kick in soon.
"I gave her some medication. It should stop the vomitting. You may take her home once it starts to work and she finishes the two saline bags. We took a blood sample for our lab. We should get a better idea of what is wrong with her in a few days. Chances are, it's a stomach bug. But we can't be 100% sure." Carlisle knew there was something bigger on their hands, but he didn't want to say anything to her father. He wanted to wait for the lab results."She should stay home from school at least for tomorrow so she can rest."

"Thank you doctor." The father said. Naomi closed her eyes and tried to rest. She really didn't want to miss another day of school. She had already missed too much. Thankfully her friend Daniel had been bringing her the work she missed so she could stay caught up. Just then, the girl dozed off. She dreamed about her mother. It was a pleasant dream. It was the kind of dream one does not want to wake up from. The medicine finally began to kick in. Perhaps she would be alright now. Though she had no clue as to what she was about to go through.

Carlisle checked her vital signs. They weren't completely back to normal. But it didn't worry him. It would be a little while."You are free to leave once this bag of saline finishes. I'll give you a call once the results come in. I would like to see her again in a few days. Here is my card." He said as he gave his business card to the middle aged man. He smiled at Naomi's sister."Take care of your sister for me little one." He said kindly. He was the kind of doctor that made kids not afraid of doctors."My work here is done for now. Just give her clear liquids for nourishment, such as broths, water and gatorade. The nurse will help you check out of here."

"Thanks, but I am afraid we won't be back. I don't think I can pay for this hospital bill let alone another one." The worried father said. He knew something bigger was wrong with his daughter because she had been sick for awhile. This saddened him and almost made him feel, not worthy enough to be a father. Because he felt like he couldn't fully provide for his children. He looked over at his daughter lying in the bed. His eyes teared up.
Ileana nodded when Carlisle told her to take care of her sister."I will Mr. doctor."
The nurse disconnected the IV tube because she had already gone through two bags, which was the standard.

Carlisle had a bleeding heart. Not literally, it's a figure of speech. Knowing the poor girl has possibly sick enough to die compelled him to offer his services, for free."If money is the only issue, don't worry about it. I would still like to see her and I will do so, free of charge."
He knew the head of the hospital would be against this, but he had to do what he felt was the right thing. He couldn't put a price on an innocent young life. If the hospital wanted the money so badly, he'd pay for it out of his own pocket. He had more than enough money."She is free to go home. The nurse will help her back into her clothes. I will see you in a few days Mr. Fox."
Carlisle smiled at the family and walked out of the room.

She sat up, happy that the tube was taken out of her arm. Her dad and sister left the room so the girl could get back into her clothes. The nurse helped her and then escorted her out to her family. She was very tired because of the medication. She thought Carlisle was a very nice doctor and wouldn't mind seeing him again, but she hoped she wouldn't have to get anymore shots.
The girl left the hospital with her dad and sister, falling asleep on the way back to La Push.
